Australia

The first European visitors were the Dutch, who explored the Gulf of Carpentaria in 1606 and settled, 1616. Captain James Cook arrived in Botany Bay in 1770 and claimed the east coast for Britain. New South Wales was established as a penal colony, 1788. Individual colonies drafted their own constitutions and set up governments: New South Wales (1855), Tasmania and Victoria (1856), South Australia (1857), Queensland (1860) and Western Australia (1890). The Commonwealth of Australia was established in 1901 and in 1913 the first Australian Commonwealth stamp was issued.
Australia also governs the following external territories:
The Ashmore and Cartier Islands
Australian Antarctic Territory
Christmas Island
Cocos (Keeling) Islands
Coral Sea Islands

Former Australian Territories Philately

The earliest postal marking in South Australia dates back to 1838 ..
- a one page display from Stewart's Stamp Shop in South Australia.

Stamp Mad - specialist collector of Queensland and Australian issues
First issued in Nov. 1860, the stamps of Queensland featured the full face image of Queen Victoria taken from a painting by Alfred Edward Chalon, hence the term Chalon Head given to this stamp. This is a classic design which also featured on the early stamps of Tasmania and New Zealand. The great thing about this issue is that there are over 150 varieties to collect... After 1879 came the first of 4 types of sideface issues and this is where the fun really starts. So many variations are available i.e. the 1d. Red comes with over 2,000 postmarks, 4 matrix types, 2 watermarks, 3 perforations and heaps of varieties and flaws, and this is from a stamp you can buy for only 20 cents. If this interests you, look at my stamp listing and I hope I can send you on your way to a terrific adventure. .. I also welcome offers of exchange both of stamps and dialogue about anything to do about this fascinating area of philately. You may have an item that may be difficult to identify or an interesting variety you want to s hare, if so, email me and if I can't help you, I'll find someone who can.

Australia, (Western) - Robin Linke: Australian and South Pacific Stamp Dealer ; 14,000+ items
Robin is forthcomming about local forgeries noting, "..There are two minor points of caution. The forger will often "seed" forged rarities in an otherwise ordinary collection. In the last year I have seen quite a number of very ordinary collections being offered in Sydney and Melbourne auctions with, surprise, surprise, a Papua New Guinea D1 or the £1 Robes overprinted "Specimen" or the inevitable mint set of Kingsford Smith O.S. overprints. Again, if the auctioneer is not prepared to offer an extension on these types of items, then don't buy them. .." (he has a page dedicated to the subject - bravo! - aj)
