Azores

The Azores were settled by the Portuguese in 1439 and were under Spanish rule, 1580-1640. They reverted to Portugal and were given limited autonomous administration in 1895. Postage stamps have been issued since 1868. Since 1980, stamps issued for the Azores have been valid in Portugal. (Linn's Stamp News notes: The islands used Portuguese stamps until 1868, when overprinted stamps came into use. Separate Azores issues were replaced by regular Portuguese stamps in 1931.)
