Belgium

Belgium was part of the Roman Empire until the 2nd century, then became part of the Frankish Empire following Celt and Germanic invasions. It was ruled by the Habsburgs from 1477 until the Peace of Utrecht, 1713, when sovereignty passed to Austria. It was conquered by the French in 1794 and was part of the French Republic and Empire until 1815. Belgium then united with the Netherlands when rebellion against Dutch rule in 1830 led to recognition as an independent kingdom under Leopold of Saxe-Coburg. The country was occupied by Germany during both world wars.
