... After the expeditions of Dr. Henry Morton Stanley (I presume - aj :) , 1874-77, it was claimed by King Leopold of Belgium. In 1907 it was renamed Belgian Congo and became independent as the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1960. It was renamed the Republic of Zaire in 1971. (per CIA World Factbook 1998 it is now back to Democratic Republic of the Congo - see '- CIA's link below- aj. The first postage stamps were issued in 1886 for the Belgian Congo, 1960 for the Congo Democratic Republic and 1971 for Zaire.
