Lithuania united with Poland, 1385 to 1795. Intensive russification led to revolts in 1905 and 1917. The country was occupied by Germany in both world wars. It was proclaimed a republic in 1918 and annexed by the USSR in 1940. Lithuania declared independence in 1990.
