Island of Pabay - a Scottish island with Norse remains dating to the 13th century, Pabay is now privately owned and going through a methodical renewal. It has issued stamps (carriage labels) in the past...
.
Many of the Scottish islands have had their own "stamps," carriage labels used to decorate outgoing mail and signify "postage" from the local post box to the nearest postal facility in Scotland. Some of these islands never have had much more than such labels, while others such as Pabay have a long and rich philatelic history.

English naval officer Philip Carteret of the HMS Swallow named Pitcairn Island in 1767, after mid-shipman Robert Pitcairn the first know European to sight Pitcairn.
.
The island was settled in 1790 by nine crew members from the H.M.S. Bounty who had earlier staged the famous "mutiny on theBounty" and set other crew members adrift at sea. These settlers brought along some Polynesians from Tahiti. By the time American sailors docked at Pitcairn in 1808 only one man was still alive. However, 25 children of the original settlers carried on the mutineers bloodlines.
.
In 1831 Pitcairn's population resettled on Tahiti, but many people later moved back to Pitcairn. In 1856, as a result of overpopulation and scarcity of food and water, the entire community moved to Norfolk Island at the behest of the British government. Many of these also returned to the island.
.
The Office of the Governor of the Pitcairn Island is located in Auckland, New Zealand.
.
The first stamp issue for Pitcairn Islands (part of the British Commonwealth) came on the scene on October 15, 1940. Before that, letters were posted with stamps from Australia, New Zealand, United States, Great Britain, etc. These letters got the New Zealand Postal Agency (NZPA) cancellation, from June 7, 1927 to October 14, 1940, are in great demand...
.
There is a very modest stamp issuing policy. To date, only 425 stamps and Souvenir Sheets have been issued since October 15, 1940...
.
(a good read. - aj )
.
... In addition, the remoteness of Pitcairn has always been a draw for stamp collectors the world over. Since the first letter was sent from Pitcairn aboard the HMS Seringapatam on 17 March 1830, until 1926, mail was simply marked "Posted on Pitcairn Island. No Stamps Available." Then for 14 years, New Zealand stamps were used until 15 October 1940 when the first true Pitcairn Island stamps were issued. Stamps, covers, and original letters have all become prized collectors items.

It was a semi-independent state after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, incorporated into the Russian Empire and after World War I, declared an independent state. "Philately is an enternainment activity for many, a state financing for some, a business for others. It is always a learning and a delight. The collector´s solitary activity opens up to human relationship without boundaries. Information technology and communication modify our life. Philately keeps up with that development. This cybernetic and philatelic space aims at being a meeting point for all who make of philately a leisure activity or a profession. A meeting point which can help in spreading portuguese philately worldwide and can introduce all those interested into computer science networks in which philately is present."

Antarctica's land mass is nearly as great as that of Europe and the USA combined. Today several countries have jurisdiction over sections of Antarctica.
.
New Zealand's Ross Dependency is among these. The Ross Dependency stretches from 160 degrees east to 15 degrees west of the Greenwich meridian. Its biggest geographical feature is the massive Ross Ice Shelf. Habitations include Scott Base (NZ) and McMurdo Sound (USA).
.
The first stamps produced specifically for use in the Antarctic were issued by the New Zealand Post Office on January 15th, 1908 when the then current 1d Universal stamp of New Zealand was issued with a special overprint reading "King Edward V11 Land". This stamp was used on mail for the first time by members of the Shackleton Antarctic Expedition. Since then, there have been many stamps issued specifically for use in the Antarctic. Ross Dependency stamps were first issued in 1957, such stamps were, however, discontinued in 1987 when the New Zealand Post Office on the ice was closed.
.
Due to both local and international demand Ross Dependency stamps were re-introduced in November 1994.

It seems much more than six years since the break-up of the Soviet Union into 15 separate self-governing republics. For anybody interested in postal history, these countries were making it then! For more about the countries and the different ways they accounted for payment of postage on letters I am putting a brief philatelic history and some images on these pages, with specific country pages to follow.

"Some times it is very difficult to classify the Zemstvo stamps, especially if you are not familiar with the Russian Language. Even the pictures as shown in the various catalogues and handbooks are not very helpful. Therefor, you will find here selected images which hopefully will help you to classify your stamps correctly.
.
Up to 1870 the Zemstvo-Post has not yet been formally legalized...
..According to the Russian laws, the post was the monopoly of the State and no other analogous organization was allowed. The Zemstvo Post, on the contrary, was considered as carrying on the work of the State Post in the localities where there was none, but not as competing with it, and thus its organization and its activity was not interfered with.

Over a thousand years ago, the far east of Europe was ruled by Jewish kings who presided over numerous tribes, including their own tribe: the Khazars. After their conversion, the Khazar people used Jewish personal names, spoke and wrote in Hebrew, were circumcised, had synagogues and rabbis, studied the Torah and Talmud, and observed Hanukkah, Pesach, and the Sabbath.
