Also home to many of the Perkins Bacon records and an interesting museum of historic philatelic artefacts. Entry is usually restricted to society members and their guests. Therefore the library and museum are not operated as a public service, although charitable status does mean the society can accommodate some visitors.

And some Tips from: http://www.stingraystamps.com/tips.htm
.
The Washington and Franklin Head stamps prove to be the most difficult for new collectors to tell apart. There are different perfs and you can use a perfgauge to determine what the perforations are. There are different types, which a good magnifying glass will determine which is which, but what do you use to tell a rotary press stamp From a flat plate press stamp? There is a thing called a Marshall's "Phil-O-Meter" gauge which if you can find one is very handy for determining this. It is also great for determining rotary press from flat plate press stamps on cover. Unfortunately, they haven't made this gauge since 1979, but some supply dealer have them if you check. A simple way to do this is to paste a used copy of a catalog number 405,406, 424 or 425 down on a piece of cardboard. Keep in mind that rotary press stamps are wider and longer than flat plate stamps. Take a stamp of the Washington/Franklin types and place it exactly over the 405, 406, 424 or 425. If it matches the exact width and length as the 405 stamp, then it is a flat plate printing. If the stamp in question is a millimeter or two larger either horizontally or vertically, then it is a rotary press stamp. AND: Early stamps were engraved, just like our paper currency.
.
Starting with Scott Catalog No. 525 the USPOD began having the Bureau of Engraving and Printing use offset presses for a while. How do you tell the difference between offset issues and engraved stamps the easy way?
.
Very simple. Turn the stamp face up. With your fingernail gently move across the face of the stamp. If your fingernail sticks while moving across the stamp, it is line engraved. If your fingernail slides easily over the face of the stamp and the stamp face has a "soapy" feel to it, it is an offset stamp.

The Numbers of US Stamps issued pre 1900 - The "Classic" U.S. period
And more from stingraystamps.com
.
One of the greatest joys of collecting United States stamps is the fact that there is almost always an enjoyable and intriguing story behind them. There are, for instance, great tales behind the discovery of some of our major errors as with the 24-cent inverted airmail stamp of 1918, which was purchased by a stamp collector in Washington, D.C. In 1869, after the U.S. Post Office Department had been issuing stamps depicting our Founding Fathers for 22 years (since our first stamps in 1847), a decision was made to change the format of America's postage stamps from rectangular to square—and depict not only Washington, Franklin and Lincoln, but pictorial designs such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Thus the definitive issue of 1869 was born. With four of the stamps printed in two colors, it is considered today to be one of our most beautiful sets. But people didn't think so in 1869! In fact, there was a giant public outcry when the 1869's were issued. People didn't like the smaller format and they especially didn't like the pictorial depictions on the stamps.
.
Newspapers all over the country published editorials in protest of their issuance. The POD was aghast at what they had done and immediately went back to the drawing boards to produce a brand new issue.
.
Consequently, the 1869's were only in formal use for less than a year. They were replaced in 1870 by what many deemed as a rather boring set of formal bust-like depictions of famous Americans. Best of all, though, the lovely 1869's are still within the budgetary reach of most collectors. They are tiny colorful jewels on an album page and, contrary to when they were issued, they are very, very popular with philatelists!

Hawaiian Stamps - (an award winning site - aj)
On October 1, 1851 the first Hawaiian stamps, the so called "Missionaries" were placed on sale. The stamps took on the name "Missionaries" because they are nearly always found on correspondence from American missionaries in Hawaii to their family back in California, New York, Connecticut, or Massachusetts. U.S Civil War Postage Currency - with images
During the first years of the Civil War the minor coins in circulation vary rapidly disappeared. Cash, in the form of coins, became a tangible asset. Anything else was just a promise. A most acute situation followed and in order that business could be transacted merchants were forced to issue notes of credit, promises to pay, tokens, store cards, etc, as means of making change. The Treasury of the United States found itself confronted with the same difficulty as everyone else. The Treasurer, Mr. F. E. Spinner, sponsored the plan of pasting postage stamps, singly and in multiples, on treasury paper to be used as small currency. Arrangements were made with the Post Office to replace worn stamps with new as occasion demanded. From that idea it was but a step to printing the stamps on treasury paper and on July 17, 1862 an Act was passed by Congress authorizing the issue of such currency to be known as Postage Currency. This currency was not money, nor did it pretend to be. It was merely a means of making postage stamps negotiable and remained in use until 1876 when Congress authorized the minting of fractional silver coins to redeem the outstanding paper fractional currency.

4. Roulette? (Are these even perfs?)

U.S. Census Bureau Tiger Map Servuce Home Page
The main purpose of the TIGER Map Service project is to provide a good-quality, national scale, street-level map to users of the World Wide Web. This service is freely accessible to the public, and based on an open architecture that allows other Web developers and publishers to use public domain maps generated by this service in their own applications and documents. We planned to provide high-quality street maps, with simple GIS capabilities such as point display (by lat/lon or address) and statistical choropleth mapping.
.
A brief feature list (as of TMS version 2.1):
.
- Street-level detail for the entire United States.
- Counties and States for the entire United States
- Cartographic design, including color, fills, and line styles, all able to be altered by the arbitrary scale.
- Users can turn individual layers on and off. This is not yet integrated into the map browser, though.
- Open interface to images (through mapgen script), allowing any user to request maps directly to inline in other documents.
- Map Browser interface, allowing users to view and browse the map database.
- Markers can be placed on the map by geographic coordinates (lat/lon). In fact, if a Web publisher has a series of points to display, this can be done with a marker file
- Creation of a legend/scale box, as a separate image.
- Reverse Coordinate Decoding, allowing a user to send a pixel coordinate (x,y) from the map and get the associated real-world coordinate. This makes interactive map-based applications using this service viable.
- Integration of a US Gazetteer, allowing users to search for a place, county, or zip code to display.
-Basic labelling of places, using a unique formula to determine relative importance of cities for selection. (v1.3)
- Creation of thematic maps based on 1990 Census Statistical data. (v2.0)

Postal Rates & Codes

FAQ 22.4 Barcodes on U.S. mail
In the USA, the barcode-like bars at the top and bottom edges of the envelope are affixed by the sender. The bars at the top alert the sorting machine to scan for the bars at the bottom. The bars at the bottom contain the full address (not just a postcode or zip code). They are NOT imprinted by the USPS at any time during the process of sending the mail, but are printed on the envelope beforehand by the sender. They enable the sender to use a lower postal rate than the standard first-class charge. FAQ 22.4
