How many countries are linked on the World Wide Web?

Did your computer really connect itself all the way to that server in Mongolia?

The answer is probably yes!   However, if you are using a proxy server at your Internet Service Provider (ISP), or if you are using a browser (eg Lynx) hosted at your ISP's site, there would not have been a continuous internet protocol (IP) connection from your machine all along the route.  Otherwise, yes there really was a connection made from your computer to those remote places!  It will be seen, however, that in some other cases servers are not physically located where they might seem to be.

This page seeks every country to which a direct connection can be made.

What's the definition of a 'country'?

In the list which follows,

Nations comprise

• UN members
• Sovereign entities which are not members of UN, eg Switzerland

Territories comprise

• Overseas departments, dependent territories, etc.
• Remote territories, eg Hawaii, remote from rest of USA
• Non-contiguous territories, eg Alaska, non-contiguous with rest of USA
• Miscellaneous entities, eg Antartica

Note that territories are listed as subsidiary to their parent nations.
