Obock, a seaport, was acquired by the French in 1862 and occupied in 1884 when Sagallo and Tadjoura were ceded to the French. Other areas were annexed by France and known as French Somali Coast in 1896. They became a French Overseas Territory after World War II, then the 'French Territory of Afars and Issas' in 1967. Independence came in 1977 as 'Republic of Djibouti'. Postage stamps have been issued since 1894.
