EQUATORIAL GUINEA
(The former Spanish Gueina)

Equatorial Guinea -
The area was first visited by Europeans in the 15th century. The island of Fernando Po was claimed by Portugal, 1494-1788 and occupied by Britain, 1781-1843. Rights to the area were acquired by Spain, 1844. Independence was granted in 1968. Postage stamps have been issued for Fernando Po 1868 - 1929 and as Equatorial Guinea since 1968.
