- Italy -
- was part of the Holy Roman Empire under Otto in 962. Napoleon I was crowned king of Italy in 1805. Unification was achieved under Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia, aided by Camillo Cavour and Giuseppe Garibaldi. Benito Mussolini came to power in 1922, Abyssinia was conquered, 1935-1936, and Albania was annexed in 1939. Alliance with Hitler during World War II led to the end of the Italian Empire. The monachy was abolished and Italy became a republic in 1946. (the names above have links at this site to a biography of people on stamps - a great work! - aj)
