KIRIBATI - former Gilbert Islands
- Kiribati - short
- Gilbert and Ellice Islands was proclaimed a British protectorate in 1892 and became a Crown Colony in 1916. The islands were occupied by Japan during World War II. Ellice Islands severed links from Gilbert Islands to form a separate dependency of Tuvalu in 1975 and Gilbert Islands became independent as Kiribati in 1979. The islands consists of Gilbert, Pheonix, Line and Ocean Islands.

- Laos - Indo-China, French (Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam 1889-1945) - all issues - outstanding site
- Indochina (Indo-chine) was under French control from 1889-1945, area consisting of Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. All the postage stamps used in Indochina were issues of French stamps with "INDOCHINE" imprint. There was only one souvenir sheet issued in Indochina, Colonial Arts Exhibition Issue on April 15, 1937. Indochina stamps are relative cheaper than other Asian countries' stamps. I believe Indochina will be a hot collecting area with in two years.

- Incorporated into Russia, 1721; following World War I it was proclaimed an independent state (1918) and admitted to the League of Nations in 1922. It was proclaimed a Soviet Socialist Republic in 1940 and occupied by Germany during World War II. The USSR regained control in 1944. Latvian nationalism was overt from 1988; a coalition government was elected in 1989; it was declared independent in 1991. The Congress of Latvia was instituted and it was granted United Nations membership in 1991.

- After the massacre of Catholic Marinites by Muslim Druzes in 1861, the Maronite area around Jabal Lubnan was granted special autonomous status. Lebanon, based on this area, was created in 1920 under French mandate with Muslim coastal regions incorporated. Lebanon became a constitutional republic in 1926 .

- Lesotho was originally inhabited by hunting and gathering bushmen. The Bantu arrived in the 16th century and the Basotho nation was established. It was incorporated into the Orange Free State in 1854 and was under British protection as Basutoland beginning in 1869. Independence was granted in 1960 and Kingdom of Lesotho was declared on October 4, 1966.

- Lithuania - short
- Lithuania united with Poland, 1385 to 1795. Intensive russification led to revolts in 1905 and 1917. The country was occupied by Germany in both world wars. It was proclaimed a republic in 1918 and annexed by the USSR in 1940. Lithuania declared independence in 1990.

Office des Timbres also operates the new Luxembourg P&T Museum, located in the post office opposite the train station at the corner of Rue d'Epernay and Avenue de la Gare. This museum, which opened on November 23, 1995, includes many philatelic gems and is well worth a visit. It is open from Tuesday to Friday from 09:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00, and on Saturday from 09:00 to 12:00.
Admission is free.
