MALAWI> Malawi - was visited by the Portuguese in the 17th century and David Livingstone in 1859. It was claimed as a protectorate of Nyasaland in 1891 and became a British colony in 1907. In the 1950s it joined with North and South Rhodesia to become the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Malawi became independent in 1964 and established itself as a republic in 1966. The first postage stamps were issued for the colony of Nyasaland Protectorate in 1908 and Malawi in 1964.
