The Great Trek by the Boers northeast across the Orange River to Natal took place in 1836. The Boer republic was founded in 1839 and Natal was annexed by the British in 1846, but the Boer republics of Transvaal (founded 1852) and the Orange Free State (1854) were recognized. Transvaal, Natal, Orange Free State and Cape Province joined as the Union of South Africa in 1910. It became a sovereign state within the Commonwealth in 1931 and an independent republic in 1961.
